Kayak Key West

Sorry I didn’t write anymore about Key West yesterday. I was too busy trying to do some work and then rocking out at the concert of the year. Seriously, the Skillets tore it up last night. I can’t wait for their new album!

Anyway, the rest of Key West was pretty laid back compared to the excitement of the tri. The highlight for me was kayaking for the first time! I joined Amy, who was born with a paddle in her hand; Beth, kayaker extraordinaire; and Wes, who also somehow had been kayaking many times. We had free rentals from the tri, so there was no better time for me to try (haha!).

Turns out 100 push ups may not be the best prep for kayaking, because, well, I need to pull to kayak well. Even though I spent much of the time paddling frantically to catch up and flinging water all over myself, I had a great time. And I can’t wait to try it again here–in August.

Safety first!

Let’s be honest, there’s no way that vest was going to stay on me if I fell in the water.

That night we got on a plane and came home, and I’ve been freezing ever since.

Good luck to everyone running Jingle All the Way tomorrow! I’ll be out there in my CAR gear and Santa hat! Come back next week for a race report and some big news!

I’m Back

Well, I’ve been back for a little while, but I’ve been overwhelmed–trying to get over jet lag, training a new editor, running 45 miles in a week, joining a new gym. Everything is going really well, but it’s been really exhausting.

Thankfully today is a holiday, so I can recharge and reset and FINALLY unpack!

As for vacation: I wish I lived in Portland. I managed to get 40 miles of running in while I was out there, including a 20 mile run on our last day (note to self–don’t save huge runs for the last day. You’ll be exhausted by the time you start.)

Here are a few photos. We took mostly video, because Wes wants to try making a movie, so I’ll put it up once that’s done. Maybe by next August 😉

Katie and me on the farm

Aaaaaaannnnnnd it looks like everything else is a video. Sorry. I’ll borrow some pics from Katie once she posts them.

P.S. My google reader is also overwhelming me right now. I’m so sorry I haven’t been commenting on everyone’s stuff, but I freak out when I see so many unread posts. I may have to just cut my losses and read on from here. But from what I have read, y’all are kicking ass, so keep it up.

Three Things Thursday

Have I mentioned that I like things that make blogging easy? Like listing three random things?

1. It is too hot to blog. Also I’m too tired and too busy running my ass off to blog. This week I’ll do 35 miles. Last week I did 29.5. It’s a big jump, and I’m feeling the corresponding aches and sleepiness, but nothing unusual or alarming yet. I’ve settled right into my new running shoes, the Saucony Omnis, but they weigh a whopping 10.6 ounces, so I’m going to have to find something lighter for the marathon. But they’re just so cushy!

They're not chubby, there's just more of them to love.

2. We’re hiring! I’m in the process of hiring a new editor, whom I will supervise! It’s very exciting, but we’ve gotten more than 100 resumes, so it’s also very overwhelming. I know I rag on being an editor, um, all the time, but I’m pretty lucky to have the job I do. At the end of the day, I love reading and criticizing, and that’s what editors do best! I’m also pretty good at it, which you would probably never guess from reading this blog. So, if you or anyone you know in the DC area wants to come work with me, let me know.

3. I’m renewing my passport so I can go to Canada during my big Pacific Northwest tour in August. I’ve been really lucky to only take passport pictures on my two worst hair days of the past 11 years. I left the picture at work, but I’ll scan it in tomorrow. In the meantime, think Oompa Loompa. And is there anything I shouldn’t miss while I’m out there? I’ve already got the Portland Triathlon on my schedule!

A Few Things

Hey everyone! It’s been a while, and I apologize. But–I’m about to use an excuse you’ve heard a hundred times before–I’ve been training more, and my workload is manageable, which means that I don’t need the break that blogging provides as much anymore, and as I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’ve been slacking. So I’ll do a quick sum-up of what’s been happening lately.

1. I got a bike! I’m pretty much in love with it and TOTALLY STOKED to ride it tomorrow. I just happened to stumble upon it on vacation, and it was too good a deal to pass up, so happy early birthday to me! On a somewhat-related note, I’ll be having a bike ride to celebrate my birthday, and readers are invited, so email me at if you want to be added to my invite.

2. My leg stopped swelling! I was able to run Cherry Blossom in 1:27:16, and I never thought I’d be so happy to run a time I ran 4 years ago, but there you go. It was a lot better than National is all I have to say.

3. I just got back from an awesome mini-vacation at the gorgeous Inn at Riverbend in Pearisburg, Va., and from the wedding of some good friends in Wilkesboro, NC.  It was fantastic. Check out the view.

4. I’m headed out to the American Odyssey Relay this weekend, so if anyone has any relay advice, please send it my way.  I need it.

Think that’s all for now. Someday maybe I’ll post a race review of Cherry Blossom, but in the meantime, I’ll recommend that you do it.
